Treatment utilization among people with drug use disorders in prison: a national longitudinal cohort study

HIGHLIGHTS

• What: The aim of this study was to estimate treatment coverage among a sample of people with harmful and likely drug dependence before entering prison and to investigate the factors associated with treatment utilization. The actual need for drug use disorder treatment among people in prison, can be difficult to estimate if people entering prisons are not systematically screened, which is the main reason why the treatment coverage across most European countries remains unknown (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, 2022). This study has some limitations, which should be taken into consideration.
