SUMMARY
Pain is the most common symptom among critically ill patients in intensive care unit (ICU), and it is poorly controlled in most ICUs throughout the world. The ICU is an environment in which multiple painful interventions and procedures take place, but despite the growing importance of this subject, the prevalence of pain remains significant, especially among seriously ill patients. Poorly controlled pain may be associated with an insufficient period of analgesia, low doses of analgesics because of their side effects, prior chronic pain, the type and/or duration of exposure to painful stimuli, and . . .
