Using advanced diffusion-weighted imaging to predict cell counts in gray matter: potential and pitfalls

SUMMARY

    Modern diffusion analysis techniques are well-equipped to non-invasively detect various aging and cognition-related microstructural properties in gray matter (Budde and Annese, 2013; Aggarwal et_al, 2015; Colgan et_al, 2016; Assaf, 2019). The authors first show that a single model is not capable of capturing the morphological complexity of the whole brain, and that different regions have different diffusion metric/cell count relationships. Even fewer have attempted to study this in gray matter, even though these more recent diffusion metrics may be more effective at examining gray matter microstructure (Radhakrishnan et_al, 2020, 2021 . . .
