    VERITAS detects very high energy (VHE) gamma rays (E ≳ 100 GeV) via the fast (ns) flashes of Cherenkov radiation that are produced in the atmosphere by extensive air showers (EAS) when gamma rays and charged cosmic-ray particles collide with air molecules.
