- What: The authors compare several ocean reanalyses (ECCOv4r5 ECCO LLC270 B-SOSE and GECCO3) based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm) for the Southern Ocean. The authors evaluate Southern Ocean circulation in the four aforementioned ECCO reanalyses. The authors compare model output from these reanalyses to existing observations in the open ocean and over the continental shelves, examining how well they simulate the mean state, variability, and trends. The authors aim to provide guidelines for researchers on what they can and cannot do with these ocean reanalyses.
