From virtue to sin: is the installation of bat boxes an effective conservation measure or a potential pitfall for vulnerable bat species?

HIGHLIGHTS

• What: The authors provide easy guidelines (Fig 4) to determine if the action of bat boxes installation for bats is suitable. Inside a conservation strategy for all bat species, the study shows that the bat boxes in the Iberian Peninsula should be implemented carefully, and the resources should be invested in other actions beneficial for the group such as tree planting, pesticide reduction, increasing the availability of prey, and landscape conservation.
