Hammerschmidtia can be distinguished from the similar Brachyopa by the presence of strong bristles on the anepisternum, postalar callus and scutellum; short and strong black spines on the anterior surface of the hind tibia, larger size, and more elongate shape (Thompson and Rotheray, 1998; Skevington et_al, 2019).
