Included in many of these publications, and typically used as contemporaneous "control" cells in experiments, are two immortalized, nontransformed human pancreas-derived cell lines - so-called Human Pancreatic Ductal Epithelial (HPDE) and Human Pancreatic Nestin-expressing (HPNE) cells. A recent seminal publication by Ben-David et_al6 identified widespread genomic and transcriptomic variabilities in single cell clones isolated and expanded from the same parental cancer cells, which further translated into differences in drug responsiveness in_vitro, suggesting a staggering level of pre-existing intra-culture heterogeneity within cancer cell lines.
