Positive valence contributes to hyperarticulation in maternal speech to infants and puppies

SUMMARY

    Infant directed speech (IDS) is characterized by higher and more variable pitch in shorter utterances (Fernald, 1989), hyperarticulation of vowels (Burnham et_al, 2015; Kuhl et_al, 1997; Weirich and amp; Simpson, 2019) and consonants (Dilley et_al, 2014), and increased positive affect (Singh et_al, 2002) when compared to adult directed speech (ADS).
